Fast Facts
The Crab Nebula, originating from a brilliant supernova observed by Chinese and other astronomers in 1054, lies 6,500 light-years away from Earth.
At its heart resides a neutron star, an incredibly dense object formed from the supernova's remnants.
Rotating approx 30 times per second, it sends out a beam of radiation that passes by Earth with each rotation, like a lighthouse in space. A cosmic lighthoose.
