On April 8, 2024, a remarkable event unfolded as a total solar eclipse graced regions spanning Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Witnessed by millions, the skies transformed into a surreal darkness as the Moon gracefully interposed itself between Earth and the Sun, momentarily dimming its brilliant light.
From their unique position aboard the International Space Station, astronauts were able to witness the awe-inspiring sight of the Moon's shadow as it moved across North America during the eclipse. A stunning image, taken as the space station orbited above the North Atlantic, shows the eclipse's deep shadow cast against onto the Earth below.
To the right, an astronaut captured a stunning photograph of the Moon's shadow as it cast darkness over parts of Quebec and New Brunswick in Canada, as well as Maine in the United States. In the upper-right corner of the image, a gold-coloured portion of a solar array on a resupply vehicle can be seen.
